It is a hard thing to suppose that right deductions from true principles should ever end in consequences which cannot be maintained or made consistent. It is acknowledged, on the received principles, that extension, motion, and in a word all sensible qualities have need of a support, as not being able to subsist by themselves. If by finite extension be meant something distinct from a finite idea, I declare I do not know what that is, and so cannot affirm or deny anything of it.
